![]() The Malaysian Organisation of Pharmaceutical Industries (MOPI) was started by eight manufacturers which were local, foreign and joint venture companies. MOPI was incorporated on 6 March 1981 as a company limited by guarantee. Raja Zainal Abidin bin Raja Haji Takchik of Raza Manufacturing Sdn Bhd was MOPI's first president. MOPI's membership is restricted to manufacturers with factories in Malaysia that are licensed by the Drug Control Authority, Ministry of Health, to manufacturee pharmaceuticals. MOPI's original membership of eight has grown to the current 36. All major pharmaceutical manufacturers in the country are members of MOPI. Main Activities
To a large extent, MOPI's existence has been a medium and catalyst for the rapid development and capitalisation of the local pharmaceutical industry during the last decade. It has evolved into a modern, sophisticated sector of the Malaysian economy, on that is capable of producing a wide range of products in compliance with the WHO Code of Good Manufacturing Practice and internationally accepted pharmacopoeia standards. MOPI has also taken on the role of training personnel in the industry in the latest technologies evolving in the industry, including training in validation procedures for processes as well as equipment and also in current Good Manufacturing Practice according to the European (PIC) Code as Malaysia is expected to be a member of the PIC/S soon. Having invested in the high-technology machineries and equipment and formalized training, MOPI members now have the capability to manufacture a wide range of products including large and small injectables, novel drug delivery systems, high technology testing and analytical equipment to met internationally accepted standards of quality assurance. Research and development
is another key area for the MOPI membership. The focus
areas are product development, formulation improvement,
dosage fabrication and novel drug delivery systems which
are carried out either in-house or in collaboration with
Universiti Sains Malaysia and other tertiary institutions
in the country.
